  • ‘Uneconomic’ Ferrari restored

News ‘Uneconomic’ Ferrari restored Wednesday, 16 February 2022 at 0:00:00 UTC By Al Suttie Ferrari Dino brought back to perfect condition The Ferrari Dino 246 that appeared on the company’s stand at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show has undergone a meticulous restoration despite being described as ‘it just didn’t look economically viable to attempt to return it to its former glory.’ However, Bell Sport and Classic took on the job and has restored the 53,400-mile Dino to what it says is a concours-level standard and arguably the best Dino in the world right now. Project leader Paul Ensor said: ‘The car had been restored twice before in its life already, but lacked real care and precision. It was painted Rosso Corsa red instead of the original Rosso Dino, which has a more ‘orangey’ hue, the leather trim was incorrect too – it was black and red as opposed to the black with orange seat towelling interior fitted at the factory. And that was just for starters. When we delved deeper, we realised that there were plenty of other problems to address too.’ The firm’s Elliot East added: ‘Rust plagued the inner wings and the misshapen front and rear valances. The ‘scoops’ on the door panels did not align with those on the body, neither in terms of height nor angle, the wheel arch heights didn’t match from one side of the car to the other and the rear roofline was off-kilter. And those were just the things we could see. We also found that at some stage replacement front wing panels had been welded on top of the original items. The same ‘technique’ had been used on the sills and rocker panels, which meant the seam lines had been lost and rust had been locked in underneath.” Tim Kearns, Managing Director of Bell Sport and Classic, said: ‘Like every project we undertake, bringing the Dino 246 GT back to be life has been a true labour of love and most definitely not a clock-watching exercise. No amount of time, expense or attention to detail has been spared in ensuring the car is now in even better condition than when it left the factory.’ https://www.bellsportandclassic.co.uk/

  • Tolman Edition 205 GTI revealed

News Tolman Edition 205 GTI revealed Monday, 21 November 2022 at 16:45:00 UTC By Al Suttie Uprated 205 GTI supplied to first customer Tolman Engineering has supplied the first of its Edition 205 GTI uprated cars. The first customer model has been supplied with a 200bhp 1.9-litre engine to show what is possible on the Peugeot’s platform. The Tolman Edition 205 GTI costs from £55,000 and customers can choose how many modifications and options they want to include in the build. All of the updates made to the car are completely reversible, with the aim to offer a car that offers the definitive iteration of the GTI. All of the Edition cars are built using a full prepared bare metal shell that is then subject to a 700-hour build process. Customers have a choice of 1.6- and 1.9-litre engines for the Tolman Edition car, and the company uprates the original 1.9 motor rather than swapping to the Mi16 motor that was a common upgrade in period. As well as uprating the engine, Tolman uses a Motec ECU with fly-by-wire throttle to help realise the 200bhp maximum from the 1.9-litre engine. There is also the option of adding a Quaife limited slip differential to help harness the power. Managing Director Chris Tolman said: ‘The overriding impression from those experiencing our development car was the emotions it invoked. Drivers stepped out of the car grinning, having rekindled that feeling that’s so hard to find when driving today’s sports cars on the road. ‘We wanted to recreate that feeling of being at one with the road, a car you can just jump in and simply enjoy driving hard. Current hot hatches surpass these cars in so many areas but despite having loads of power and incredible dynamics, they fail to rekindle that emotional involvement that made us feel special with the 205.’ Further Tolman Edition cars are planned based on hot hatches from the 1980s and 1990s, and all will come with a 12-month parts and labour warranty, and 12-month service and inspection at Tolman Engineering included in the price. http://www.tolmanengineering.co.uk
