- Land Rover Defender thefts soar, Al Suttie, Defender thefts increase by 34% in 12 months, Thefts of Land Rover Defenders have increased by 34% between 2021 and 2022. Figures from NFU Mutual show thieves are targeting these Land Rovers as they are easy to steal and there is a ready market for used parts. Rebecca Davidson, Rural Affairs Specialist at NFU Mutual, said: ‘With older models retaining their vintage value and newer used cars soaring in price, thieves are scouring the countryside for Land Rovers, as well as dismantling them for parts. ‘We know that when prices go up, thieves are quick to cash in and the decrease in rural theft that we saw over lockdown is well and truly over.’ DC Chris Piggott, of the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service, said: ‘We are particularly concerned that the older Land Rover Defender models, the workhorses which are so important to many people’s everyday activity, are at risk because of a lack of modern security systems. ‘Owners should therefore fortify their vehicles as much as possible, using a combination of measures such as immobilisers, tracking devices and pedal and steering wheel locks. ‘It’s also common to see vehicles stripped for parts in situ, but good site security and simple, cost effective measures can make life difficult enough for thieves for them to abandon their attempts.’

- Veterans complete London to Brighton on sustainable fuel, Al Suttie, Two entrants in London to Brighton Run powered by sustainable fuel, Sustainable fuel was used for the first time in two of the entrants for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. A single-cylinder, 6.5bhp 1904 Covert ran using 100% fossil-free fuel developed by P1 and similar to the decarbonised fuel used officially in the FIA World Rally Championship. Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, and Mark Roper, Managing Director of Hagerty International, shared a 1901 Mors powered by sustainable fuel. Cussons said: ‘It really could not have been any easier. We simply drained and refilled the tank, completed a short test drive and packed the Mors off to London for the dawn start on the next day. In what were truly testing conditions, the car performed superbly – if anything the engine ran better than ever. ‘While electric cars may be part of the solution, it’s so very important that we keep an open mind. If we can find affordable alternatives that do not require a complete overhaul of the infrastructure as well as environmentally costly replacement of existing vehicles, so much the better.’

- Report shows classics produce 0.22% of transport emissions, Al Suttie, loop report shows low impact of classic cars on emissions, A new report by the loop agency shows the UK’s entire classic car fleet emits just 0.22% of total transport carbon dioxide emissions. The report likens this to drinking three lattes a day or taking a return flight from London to New York as the average classic car in the UK produces a total of 614.6kg of CO2 per annum. Using data from the DVLA and Department for Transport, the report calculated the average annual emissions of classic cars in the UK. The report also looks at how fuel efficiency and car use have changed over time. Alex Kefford, author of the loop report, said: ‘Assigning a figure to the carbon footprint of the UK’s classic cars has long been a challenge. By taking a data-first approach that included developing our own software, delving into decades of dusty archives, and crunching our way through millions of datapoints, we’ve been able to shed some light on this particularly tricky topic. ‘Along the way, we’ve discovered that the humble MGB is the most popular classic with Brits, that there are more classic Ford Escorts and Volkswagen Golfs declared as SORN as there are registered on our roads, and that average passenger car fuel economy has doubled since 1956.’
